Health Effects - Compact Fluorescent Bulbs
Health Effects - Compact Fluorescent Bulbs

Many people have reported sensitivity to Fluorescent Bulbs, and now with the compact version (CFL) set to take over in 2010 - was it really well planned? Did the industry do any tests to show the safety of the product before releasing the product? Sounds similar to the Cell Phone issue - infact it is. CFL emit high amounts of Electromagnetic radiation.
People who wish to argue this fact should first get a RF meter and test it themselves beforehand. Some CFL cause the meters to go off the charts!! - even higher then Cell Phones. So what else is there on the market? LED has also been tested and has a considerably low level of emissions - far lower then anything else on the market. So why is North America been forced to buy CFL when LED was available in Europe? LED is now making its way into the regular stores - watch for it, test it, demand it. By the time 2010 bans regular bulbs you will already know the healthy choice and avoid the headaches.
For those familiar with the show Myth busters, watch the episode all about testing CFL verses LED and see the comparison, LED lasted long after all the other bulbs

Here's a cute skit that shines a nasty light on the true problem with CFL bulbs. FYI, CFL's contain 5 miligrams of mercury per bulb and not the 5 grams they say in this skit.

*Study warns of green light bulb 'Electrosmog'*
http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/swiss_news/Study_warns_of_green_light_bulb_electr…Swiss health officials are recommending that people stay at least 30 centimetres away from energy-saving light bulbs, over electrosmog concerns.
A study has measured the electric fields emitted from these lamps and concluded that a certain distance is needed to keep well under international limits.
Low- and medium-frequency magnetic and electric fields can induce electric currents in the body which, above a certain frequency, can stimulate the nerves and muscles.
The Swiss study, undertaken for the federal offices of health and energy, found that medium-frequency electric fields were primarily responsible for these currents. Depending on the lamp, current field densities in the immediate vicinity reach 10-55 per cent of the exposure limit.
As this weakens with distance, health officials have recommended as a personal precaution to maintain a gap of at least 30 centimetres, for example from a desk lamp that is being used for a long time.
Switzerland started to phase out the least efficient categories of light bulbs at the beginning of last year and will officially follow the European Union's line on 100W lamps from September 1, 2010.
From 2012, only bulbs meeting or exceeding mid-category D requirements will be on sale - the equivalent to banning conventional light bulbs.

The Light Bulb Conspiracy

We are told that we can save energy and money by using energy-saving light bulbs. However, are you sure that the utility companies want their annual income reduced? Could this be a conspiracy to justify their rate increases?

Obama, Democrats close last US Light Bulb Factory
WINCHESTER — General Electric's Winchester lamp plant closed its doors Friday, a victim of shifting consumer demand driven by new federal lighting efficiency standards.
The facility at 125 Apple Valley Road in Kernstown was GE's last U.S. plant for assembling household incandescent light bulbs, which are set to become obsolete by the end of the decade.
The closing affects 193 hourly and 10 salaried employees. The plant opened in 1975.
"Legislation requiring tougher energy standards, customers moving to more energy-efficient light bulbs and old technology being replaced with higher-technology light sources are driving a profound transformation in the lighting industry worldwide," Ron Wilson, general manager of GE Lighting's Global Supply Chain, says in a news release.
"As difficult as this action is because of the impact on employees, given these fundamental changes we have to take action now to reshape GE's lighting business," Wilson says.
Under the energy bill passed by Congress in December 2007, incandescent bulbs — a technology largely unchanged since Thomas Edison first flipped a switch in his Menlo Park laboratory in New Jersey in 1879 — will be phased out in the U.S., starting with 100-watt bulbs in 2012. Other wattages will soon follow.

LED Basics and Background
A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor chip that emits light when conducting current. LED's are very versatile due to their ability to emit nearly all spectrums of light. This has led to their nearly universal adoption as a light source for a wide range of applications from: status indicator lights, to traffic signals, to today's advanced direct replacement LED light sources.
Although, LED's that produce a practical spectrum of visible light have been under constant development since the 1960's, only recently have LED's that can produce acceptable levels of illumination - for a primary lighting source in a home or business - seen mass production. The pace of innovation in the field of LED illumination, also referred to as Solid State Lighting (SSL), is currently progressing at an amazing pace. The latest bulbs available from EarthLED did not even exist one year ago!All EarthLEDs are rated to have a 50,000+ hour lifespan, in this same amount of time you will buy over 50 regular incandescent bulbs or 5 compact florescent bulbs!
