Parents should think twice before giving in to a middle-schooler's demands for a cell phone, some scientists say, because potential long-term health risks remain unclear.

Researchers have speculated for more than 10 years that the electromagnetic radiation (search) emitted from cell phones may damage DNA and cause benign brain tumors (search), said Henry Lai, a bioengineering professor at the University of Washington.

"We don't know very much about the health effects of cell phone use on kids, but there are speculations," Lai said.

In Britain, the chairman of the National Radiological Protection Board advised in January that parents should not give mobile phones to children age 8 or younger as a precaution against the potential harm of radiation from the devices.

When you use a cell phone, 70 to 80 percent of the energy emitted from the antenna is absorbed by the head, Lai said.
Several research studies have pointed to the potential impacts of long-term absorption of cell phone-emitted radiation but little of the research has focused on the children.

Lai said he was concerned about the impact on children because young skulls are thinner and the growing brain may be more susceptible to radiation.

He also said that because brain tumors usually take 30-40 years to develop, children who use cell phones from their teen years onward would have a longer period of time to see a cumulative impact.
Last week, a federal appeals court in Maryland reinstated five class-action lawsuits claiming that the cell phone industry has failed to protect consumers from unsafe levels of radiation.

Magda Havas is Associate Professor of Environmental & Resource Studies at Trent University where she teaches and does research on the biological effects of environmental contaminants. Dr. Havas received her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, completed Post-Doctoral research at Cornell University, and taught at the University of Toronto before going to Trent University in Peterborough, Canada.

Smelters & Air Pollution
Magda Havas began research on acid rain and metal pollution in 1975 and worked at the Smoking Hills in the Canadian arctic, in Ontario near the INCO and Falconbridge metal smelters, and at Hubbard Brook in New Hampshire. She was Science Advisor to the Canadian Coalition on Acid Rain and her research (and that of others) helped bring in clean air legislation (Eastern Canadian Acid Rain Program) in 1985 that reduced sulphur dioxide emissions by 30% and lead to improvements in air and water quality and ultimately resulted in the recovery of lakes, which she also studied. Her paper "Red Herrings in Acid Rain Research" confronted the misconceptions that were being perpetrated about acid rain and its effects.

Power Lines
Dr. Havas's research since the 1990s is concerned with the biological effects of electromagnetic pollution including radio frequency radiation, electromagnetic fields, dirty electricity, and ground current. She works with diabetics as well as with individuals who have multiple sclerosis, tinnitus, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and those who are electrically hypersensitive. She also conducts research on sick building syndrome as it relates to power quality in schools.

University Course on Electrosmog and ElectroHyperSensitivity
Since the mid 1990s Dr. Havas has taught about electromagnetic pollution in several courses at Trent University and has supervised Reading Courses and Honours Thesis Projects in this area. One of the courses deals specifically with the biological effects of electromagnetic fields and electromagnetic radiation. This is one of the few courses available in North America at a senior undergraduate level critically examining the effects of non-ionizing radiation.

Science & Policy
Dr. Havas helped draft Resolution 15 that was passed by the International Association of Firefighters in August 2004 in Boston. She also helped draft a Ground Current Pollution Bill 143 that unanimously passed its second reading in the Ontario Legislative Assembly. This lead to amendments to the Distribution System Code introduced by the Ontario Energy Board to help mitigate ground current problems in rural Ontario.

Expert Testimony
She has given talks in more than a dozen countries on her research and provides expert testimony on the health effects of electromagnetic pollution as they relate to occupational exposure, high voltage transmission lines, magnetic fields, and both cell phone and broadcast antennas.
Dr. Havas has been an advisor to several public interest groups and educational groups concerned with the health of the environment. She is currently science advisor on EMF-related issues to several non-profit organizations including: The Canadian Initiative to Stop Wireless Electric and Electromagnetic Pollution (WEEPInitiative); the Council on Wireless Technology Impacts (CWTI) and the EMR Policy Institute (EMRPI) in the US; HESE and the EM Radiation Research Trust (EMRRT) in the UK; International Commission for Electromagnetic Safety (ICEMS) in the EU; and the Nationaal Platform Stralingsrisicos (NPS) in the Netherlands.

Dr. Havas recently wrote, with Camilla Rees, Public Health SOS: The Shadow Side of the Wireless Revolution and has co-edited three books and has published more than 100 articles.

Most Recent Study on the Heart
Her most recent paper (October 22, 2010), documents definitive evidence that radiation from a cordless phone, common in many homes, causes heart arrhythmia and tachycardia (rapid heart rate) and alters the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system similar to a "fight-or-flight" stress response. It is the first study of its kind demonstrating such a dramatic and repeatable response to pulsed-microwave radiation at levels 0.5% of federal guidelines in both Canada and the U.S. This double-blind, peer-reviewed study in the European Journal of Oncology LIbrary Vol 5 2010, is called "Provocation Study using Heart Rate Variability shows Radiation from 2.4 GHz Cordless Phone affects Autonomic Nervous System." It clearly shows that some individuals are hypersensitive to this radiation and react immediately and only during active provocation.

"Even when the microwave oven is working correctly, the microwave levels within the kitchen are likely to be significantly higher than those from any nearby cellular phone base-stations. Remember also that microwaves will travel through walls if the microwave oven is against an inside wall."

Powerwatch also states that we don't really know if the current regulations about leakage are truly safe and recommends ovens be checked at least annually, since microwave emissions can change with normal use.

You might also consider purchasing a $20 testing device that allows you to check the radiation in your home.

Make sure that, if you are going to use your microwave for cleaning sponges or for any use at all, regularly examine the door and hinges to make sure they are sealing properly. If the door doesn't close correctly, or if it's warped, bent, or otherwise damaged, don't use it at all!

Since your eyes are known to be particularly susceptible to microwave radiation (high microwave exposures are known to cause cataracts), I recommend stepping away from your microwave while it's in use.

New Study Confirms Microwaves Affect Your Heart

Cell phone radiation is trending on the heels of a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers found a 7 percent energy increase in brain tissue closest to the cell phone's antenna when subjects used a phone for 50 minutes. While that's several times less activity than visual brain regions show during an engaging movie, the study's co-author Dardo Tomasi says, "[I]t's still unnatural. Nature didn't prepare our brains for this." Unlike previous studies that suggested a link between cell phone radiation and cancer, the new study doesn't conclude whether these effects are positive or negative. But it's the first to show that brain tissue is activated by exposure to cell phone radio frequencies.

No studies have linked to use of cell phones to cancer of the testis. Sterility, however, is another question. Experiences or not radiofrequency radiation emitted by cell damage (even when the phone is turned off) semen has been made since at least 2003, when a study in rats found "no evidence suggesting an adverse effect of phone cell exposure on…testicular function or structure. Another study of rat two years later was also reassuring, concluding that the radiation "" issued by a conventional cell phone does not affect testicular function in adult rats. ""

Unfortunately, these studies have not had the last word. A significant study of 2005 mice than "an on…spermatozoa genotoxic effect [DNA damaging]."
A 2007 rat study found "much higher incidence of sperm cell death," suggesting "that carrying cell phones about reproductive organs could affect male fertility.". And a 2009 rat study concluded that radiation from cell phones "negatively affects the quality of the sperm and may impair male fertility."

How do Wireless Telephone Systems Work?
Wireless telephone systems work on a different concept from radio transmission systems most people are familiar with, such as television and radio stations. In most types of radio transmission systems, the object is to transmit your signal as far as possible, in order to maximize the amount of listeners or viewers you may have.
In cellular systems, the object is to transmit a controlled signal. This is done to maximize the amount of channels that are given to each cellular provider for use. Cellular systems are assigned a set number of channels for a given area, usually around 400. In order to maximize the amount of calls/channels per given geographic area, they break the coverage area into a series of cells. Each cell can cover anywhere from a one mile radius from the base station in the city and urban areas to a 10 mile radius in the countryside and rural areas. Usually an arrangement of seven repeating cells is used, with 50 or 60 channels used per cell. As you move a mobile phone between these cells, the mobile phone is 'handed off' between the cell sites and channels, being controlled by the mobile telephone switching office (MTSO), or mobile switching center (MSC). This makes use of the most important part of the cellular system, frequency re-use. There are only a limited amount of channels available in any cellular system, and this system makes the same channel available in different geographic parts of the system, to different users.
Signals are sent back and forth between the MTSO and the cell site over high capacity circuits (DS3) or microwave links. This is known as backhaul, or the process of bringing the signal from the switch to and from the individual cell site.
There are two main frequencies used for wireless telephone communications in the United States. These are 1.9 Ghz (1900 Mhz) and 800 Mhz. All systems using 1.9 Ghz utilize digital technology and are referred to as PCS http://www.emfnews.org/headset.html

You may have already done your research on cell phone safety, realized it's not safe for adults or children and either drastically reduced your usage, gotten an air tube headset, or like me, just stopped using one (along with your cordless phone in your house, which uses the same microwave frequency).

But have you thought about WiFi safety, or wireless computer/internet safety? Perhaps you have a wireless computer network in your house, or at work? Will Europe Ban Cell Phones for "Under-age" Use?
The Vienna Medical Association is demanding the removal of zero tariffs and the banning of mobile phone advertising targeting children and adolescents. Says Erik Huber, environment advisor for the association: "Children under the age of 16 should never use a mobile phone."
Many scientists and government agencies in Europe have already accepted that EMF from cell phones does pose health risks, reflected in Huber's statement, "Scientists do not argue anymore whether mobile phones are harmful, but how harmful they are."
The best way to protect yourself would be to simply not use a cell phone and revert back to a corded phone. At the very least I would urge you to not let your kids use them or severely limit their use. Their developing nervous systems and thinner skulls are simply too vulnerable to cell phone damage.

If you choose to keep your cell phone, make sure you use a non-Blue Tooth headset. Also remember, even when you're not using your phone, keep it as far away from your body as possible. Do not keep it on your belt or in your pocket as the radiation WILL penetrate your body wherever the phone is attached. According to a scientific study published in Fertility and Sterility in May 2007, statistically significant changes were found in men's sperm count and health of the sperm, based on cell phone use.
Their conclusion? "Use of cell phones decreases the semen quality in men by decreasing the sperm count, motility, viability and normal morphology. The decrease in sperm parameters was dependent on the duration of daily exposure to cell phones, and independent of the initial semen quality."
So, make sure you stow your cell phone in a bag, briefcase, or your car's glove compartment.

"They experimented on rats aged between 12 and 26 weeks. Their brains are regarded as being in the same stage of development as teenagers.

The rats were exposed to two hours of radiation, equivalent to that emitted by mobile phones.
Their brains were examined under a microscope 50 days later.

The researchers found that rats which had been exposed to medium and high levels of radiation had an abundance of dead brain cells.

Professor Salford said there was good reason to believe that mobile phones could have the same effect on humans.

""A rat's brain is very much the same as a human's. They have the same blood-brain barrier and neurons,"" he told BBC News Online.

""We have good reason to believe that what happens in rat's brains also happens in humans.""
Professor Salford said that there was also a chance exposure to mobile phone radiation could trigger Alzheimer's disease in some people.

""What we are saying is those neurons that are already prone to Alzheimer's disease may be stimulated earlier in life.

""However, this theory is hypothetical. We do not have evidence yet that the human brain is affected in this way.""

The study is published in Environmental Health Perspectives - the journal of the US government's National Health Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

Writing in the journal, the researchers concluded: ""We cannot exclude that after some decades of often daily use, a whole generation of users may suffer negative effects maybe already in their middle age.""
